Corner to Corner placemats

I have been on a kick of making placemats again. I love giving them as gifts and I have three weddings with showers coming up. So I came up with another pattern which I really like. Actually it can be used as a baby blanket if made larger or used as a square in a larger blanket. So here is the pattern for the C2C (corner to corner) placemat.

All terms are in American Crochet

Sl = slip stitch
Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet

Supplies:

  • 2 skeins of turquoise yarn (or any other color you like)
  • 2 skeins of tan yarn (or any other contrasting color to the first)
  • size 5mm crochet hook

You make a 17 row by 25 row C2C rectangle with a border of sc followed by a Db and a round of crab stitch to  finish it off.

Directions for C2C:

Make 2 rectangles from each color

Row 1

  1. Ch 6
  2. In fourth ch from hook Db
  3. Db in next 2 stitches.

(This will create a group of 4 Db stitches forming a square)

Row 2-17

  1. Ch 6
  2. In fourth ch from hook Db
  3. Db in next 2 stitches ( This creates the next square in the pattern)
  4. Turn square into square from the row before and slst to chain stitch of the square.
  5. Ch 3
  6. Db x3  around the ch3 in the square from the row before
  7. Sl to ch3 in next square of row before
  8. repeat steps 4-7 for each square in row before.

each row increases by 1 square. When you have 17 squares you will stop increasing on one side.

Row 18-25

  1. Sl down the side of the last square on the row before. (This is the side you will continue to slst on inorder not to increase)
  2. Ch 3
  3. Db x3 around the Ch 3 in the square from the row before
  4. Sl to Ch3 in next square of row before
  5. repeat steps 2-4 for each square in row before.
  6.  start next row by Ch 6
  7. In fourth Ch from hook Db
  8. Db in next 2 stitches ( This creates the next square in the pattern)
  9. Turn square into square from the row before and Sl to chain stitch of the square.
  10. Ch 3
  11. Db x3  around the Ch3 in the square from the row before
  12. Sl to Ch3 in next square of row before
  13. repeat steps 4-7 for each square in row before.
  14. Repeat steps 1-13 until you have 17 squares on one side and 25 squares on the other.

Now you will be decreasing each side until you have a full rectangle of 17 x 25 squares or rows.

Row 26-41

  1. Sl down the side of the last square on the row before. (This is the side you will continue to slst on inorder not to increase)
  2. Ch 3
  3. Db x3 around the Ch 3 in the square from the row before.
  4. Sl to Ch3 in next square of row before.
  5. repeat steps 2-4 for each square in row before.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 until you have finished off the rectangle.

Border

use contrasting color from the C2C to make the border

Attach to any side the yarn

  1. Sc around the outside of the C2C rectangle, At the corners do 3Sc in the same stitch.
  2. Db in each Sc around doing 3Db in each corner
  3. Make one Crab stitch or reverse single crochet stitch in each Db around
  4. finish off and weave in all ends.
